You need a big enough tank for your gold fish, but presumably you can have them in smaller tanks when they are small and then move them into bigger ones when they grow up.

But how do you know when to up grade? Will they just stop growing at the size of tank they are in, be uncomfortable then keel over, or will they grow a bit too big and then you'll know?

Hi

I have just moved my 2 common gold fish and 1 shubunkin in to there bigger home, the old tank was about fifteen gallons there new tank is 25 gallons the biggest fish is 2.5" the smallest about 1.5 obviously the small tank wasn’t big enough as they grow they need more room.

As for growing, there growth would be stunted from what I’ve read on these forums and it wouldn’t be very nice to keep them in a small space.

That's my view but don’t listen to me, im fairly new to keeping fish my self.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of keeping them in too small a tank, I was just wondering, as I only have a 15 gallon tank, and I want to get 2 fancy goldfish. This seems more than reasonable when they are small but a bit tight when they grow. I am just paranoid that I upset them thats all.

Thanks for your reply!

to be honest if you buy a big tank to start with you will save money in the long run as there will be no buying smaller tanks upgrading and selling the smaller tanks at a loss

gold fish grow very fast in my experience mine has doubled in size since 7 months

 yup.. but if you really want to keep them in the 15 gal and then upgrade, they will probably be alright in the 15 for about a year..
