Goldfish And Live Plants

I fancy trying live plants in my goldfish tank…any recommendations of stuff they won’t destroy, and stuff they’d like to eat? I’d like to put some low maintenance/low light plants in there that will be able to stay and grow; but I’d also like to put some smaller plants in there that they might like to eat.

Are there any fertilizers which you’d recommend most? Would any of the plants root in gravel or would I need to put some sort of soil/substrate down and cover with gravel, would I need to use a CO2 diffuser or would they be ok without it?

Java fern is often reccomended, same as moss and anubias. Thereoretically they won't eat them and since they attatch to wood or rock they can't be uprooted. They wouldn't need any additional ferts or CO2 either.

Ironically I have java fern and anubias in my newt tank (I'll see how they go first). I managed to luckily pick up some Java Fern in a LFS; no where sells it, it would seem. The anubias is looking good and the java fern is looking ok (minus one bit but it wasn't healthy looking to begin with) - I've only had them a week.

I've got java moss on order too (if it ever arrives)

I'd say hornwort is worth a try, too. It can grow free floating, and even though they'll certainly eat it (many of my fish graze on it), it can grow ridiculously fast and you'll still probably need a rake to keep it under control. You can tie it to rock or stonework if you want, or just let it float. If you do let it float, once it takes off it can make a nice canopy effect.

java moss is no good mine make a meal of it straight away
in fact i now get it for them to chomp on good source
of greens they also eat cabomba and elodea i think you
would get away with java fern anything that is soft leafed
will be chomped

If my java fern ever arrives and if there is too much (i ordered a lot) then I may try it out with the fish
