I have been trying to find information on the behavior between goldfish and the dojo loach. I have a 4.5" goldfish and a 6.5" dojo that have been in the same 55 gal tank for about 6-7 months.

My question is...what is my dojo doing when he swims beside the goldfish and bumps against him?
The dojo gets along with all the other fish in the tank....he just seems to like this goldfish. He doesn't look like he's hurting it. Do you think he is trying to mate with the goldfish?

And no the goldfish doesn't belong in this tank and should be removed....I know. I accidently received him in a bag of rosy red comets that I bought for my 2 fat african clawed frogs. I spared him because he was regular goldfish and threw him in my bigger tank. I keep saying I am going to take him to my brother's outdoor goldfish pond but wonder if the dojo will be loney.

What do you think????

Hi bluemoon :)

Welcome to the forum! :flowers:

Goldfish and loaches usually get along well, but I doubt that your loach is trying to mate with it.

Why do you say your goldfish shouldn't be in your tank? Do you keep tropicals in there too?

I'll be looking forward to reading about your frogs in the Invertebrates and Amphibians section. I keep them too and enjoy them thoroughly!

my dojo does the exact same although we call it a weather loach in the uk,,the reason being sometimes when fish eats i dont know if you,ve noticed but food particles sometimes escapes from the fish,s gills so the loach is just searching for those particles . ive had my dojo with my fancys for an age and ive never once had a problem drop some frozen bloodworm in there to fill him up he,ll stop doing it eventually,as for keeping a goldfish with fancys ive done that also, the saying goes you shouldn,t put a normal goldy in with twin tails(fancys)as they chase and nip them and wear them out but i have never had that problem

I have one fat fancy female in with 2 regular goldfish, and they never nip; the only reason they ever bother during certain times of the year is because, well, she's a female.
