Hi,
I'm about ready for my first fry. The last thing on my checklist is Food. I have been looking into all types of food, and at what stages to use them. I came across this:
Has anyone used it? What size pearls, and how old were the fry? Anyone ever use as a FIRST FOOD?

GOLDEN PEARLS
200-300 micron size is just right to feed if you don't have time to hatch Brine Shrimp (400micron) or if you don't have any luck hatching them and seeing them die off.

5-50 microns: Active Spheres- Great for Reef Tanks

100-200: Rotifer Size -Great for Betta Fry & Reef Tanks

200-300: Artemia Size 1-Great for Betta & Small Fry Tanks

300-500: Artemia Size 2-Great for Fry Tanks- Equal to Newly hatched Brine Shrimp

500-800: Weaning Diet- Great for Guppies and medium size fish

It'll be ok, good luck!!

Don't worry about golden pearls for now, I've never found them to be an essential, more like an extra.Betta fry just really don't want anything unless it's wiggling. Stick with the bbs and microworms. You have those, right?

No, that is why I had started this post. I hoped to hear that live wasn't mandatory; just preferred. I didn't want to have to rely on them in case The worms died, or I couldn't get the shrimp to hatch.
Have you ever done it without using live, or do you know anyone who has?

I've never chanced it,nooo. But I know of people who have. Some have success and others have had rapid die off's. I've heard that they eat boiled egg yolk, but those would have to be really, really hungry fry IMO, because they just don't want something unless it's right in their face and moving. I've offered dry food at about a week to two weeks during a desperate moment of no bbs (and micro refusal), and they don't even look twice at it.
IMO,the work for live food is just part of raising them. If you're already trying to find shortcuts, you might be sorry you even started this at all in a couple of months when those jars are demanding food twice a day and water changes.

Anyway, maybe someone else has had better luck than I. Good luck to ya again.

In case you do want to try live food, theres a load of info at www.highprairiefood.com . Never bought from them , but plan to.
Luck

I tried breeding bettas the first time a year or two ago when I was really too inexperienced to do it and didn't know what I was getting into... I didn't use live foods, and suffice to say only 8 survived to adulthood out of nearly 100 wigglers... I definitely wouldn't go that route ever again.

That's why I want to ask before I tried it myself. I guess I'll be shopping online today for some live stuff. Other than BBS, what else is good for newly hatched bettas?

Microworms are good and easy to culture... also infurosia, but only for the smallest of fry

How long before hatching do I need to start them? I have my pair ready. Just waiting for rain. OH, also it has been 2 weeks, she has her breeding stripes, but her belly doesn't look huge. How big should it be?

If you get a good microworm culture going it should be ready for harvesting within about 4-5 days, a week at most
The female's belly doesn't necessarily have to be extremely swollen... if it has been two weeks and she has her vertical stripes, I'd say she's probably ready to breed, even without the swollen belly... can she see the male? If not, seeing him will probably make her swell with eggs.

the baby bettas will take dry foods, but the main problm is once you feed them the good stuff (live foods) they want nothing else. live foods also are better in that they provide much mor energy and the fry will grwon tons faster and healthier.
