Hello All,

I am new to the tropical aquarium game (by about 6 hours) and I have a couple of questions already:

1: Do Golden Apple Snails Need any supplementary food - i.e. lettuce leaves, or cucumber slices etc? I remember seeing some greens in a tank in the pet shop, but I cant remember whether it was the G A Snail tank.

2: Do Golden Loach's Gills normally flap open and closed really really fast? Or is this perhaps because they are new, in a new tank and they are a bit stressed. (anyone would be after taking a passenger ride with me!) They have already started feeding and chadsing the Neons so they seem ok though.

3: What is the average number of fish i should put in a 60 Litre, Juwel aquarium? - I already have 11 Neons (Got a job lot discount from my local pet shop) 2 Loaches - who are already getting aggressive after 12 hours, and Sid - the snail.
The youth in the shop said up to 25 little ones should be the most...

Thanks :dunno:

Chris

Yes applesnails do need supplemenatry feeding, lettuce has no nutritional value and I recommend you either feed them algae pellets fish flakes (they will eat these if they are left over and will go up to the top to suck them in (if your fish are not surface feeders)). Or lastly blanched cucumber/courgette works a treat, don't leave it in too long as it will cloud up your water. Have fun, applesnails are great!

Hi Tank Commander :)

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Did I just hear you say your aquarium is brand new? If it is, there are some things you will need to learn quickly. I'm referring to some basic science that is involved in making your tank a happy and safe habitat for your new pets. Please read the following article and then post whatever questions you need to in the Beginners forum.

We're here to help you, so don't hesitate to ask.

Ok, I have done some research:

1. About 24 inches of fish can go in my aquarium (Juwel 60 litre)

2. My Snail loves cucumber and has eaten a whole slice and is now nibbling at the lettuce

3. My water checked out ok at the LFS (a little high in PH so I am adding some crushed Oyster shell tonight straight after the fresh Irish mussels get the good news)

4. I have invested in a bubble pump (IT IS SO NOISY!) and the fish are a lot better - more active and not sitting at the top as if they are desperate for oxygen and the rate of movement in the gills and mouth has decreased. there are actually some bubbles of air sitting on the inside of the glass now so they cant be short of oxygen.

5. My Golden Apple Snail has eaten the one dead Neon that was in the tank and seems rather happy about the whole thing.

This forum is really good - I wilsh I had checked it out before buying my tank
