I don't know if I was just unlucky, but my Golden Ancistrus died last night :(

But I don't know why. He seems to of been ok for the last two weeks that I have had him. When I bought him he was just over 0.5 inches in length. He has been very active and eating. Hw was just over 1 inch so he seem to grow very quickly.
But last night he was very scatty for about 2 minutes (if that) and then died!

I checked the tank parameters last night and they are just fine. Ammo 0, Nitrite 0, and Nitrate is at 5ppm (usually goes up to 10ppm before water change). The LFS have aslo checked my water with the same results. I have had a couple of unexplained deaths (ill gourami and a blood fin tetra with a bent spine) in the tank but I have just put this down to being unlucky.

Am I doing something wrong?

Si

Well your obviously doing everything right. Maybe he was just an unlucky fish??
some pets shops sell some dodgy fish.

We had the same thing happen to us. We bought a beuatiful plec last year put him in the tank, a few hours later he did a lovely dance around the tank and ..... died!!!

Every other fish was fine but i have been told that plecs are quite sensitive especially when young. I think its one of the great mysterys of fishkeeping

Very soory about your loss, its gutting when you search for just the right fish for your tank and then they go and do that for you.

Thanks for the replys and kind words folks.

Since yesterday my Dwarf gourami has just died of a mysterious death :( But I have had no luck with dwarf gouramis (the red and blue neon which are the least hardiest). Which has now got me worried as I bought a new plec (L015) yesterday and I am now concerned for the rest of the tank. I just don't know

I re-tested the water yesterday, Ammo 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate 5ppm, phosphate <1mg/l, and ph 8.0 (normal for the area) so this all seems to be ok.

Cheers

Si

that may be your problem...

most plecs like a lower PH.

you might like to try and find a way of brining it down a bit (7 would be a good PH to be at)
