Hi guys

I recently bought 2 gold severums from my lfs, they were sold as a pair (male @ female) and were sitting in the tank i bought them from quite peacefully, since bringing them home the larger of the two chases the smaller one whenever their paths cross, its not relentless but it can be from one end to the other and never an opputunity goes by without a chase.
I have no experience of these fish and wondered if at some point a pecking order will be established or if this is just what severums do?, i did ring my lfs and the guys quite happy for me to return one, but thats the last option for me! at the mo there no more than 2 inches but i know they get a lot bigger, there in a 100g tank with plenty of mopani wood so hiding places is`nt a problem for the little one.
Any advice?

cheers!

if there new to the tank there probably jus establishing a pecking order.

"im the boss of this tank" kinda thing.

aslong as the weaker sev isnt getting badly nipped or anything then it should be fine.

yeah most agressive cichlids you can expect a bit of it at first, they should settle down, give them a few weeks, keep a v close eye on them that they're not getting too badly nipped or hurt. If they are or it hasn't settled within a few weeks then return one to the lfs. :)

WOW 2 inch severums in a 100gallon tank :good: . i wish i had that type and space lol. how the hell do you figure out which are females and males i got 6 2.5-3 inch severums all look same to me :D

Thanks guys!
i will keep a close watch on the situation, they`ve been in the tank for just under two weeks now and the smaller of the two has taken up residence behind the pump uptake and heater and cuts a very forlorn shape!
i`ll give it another week and if things have`nt improved off one of them goes! trouble is which one! dilemma's dilemma's.
and no they hav`nt got the tank to themselves its the usual fish soup!!! :)

thanks again.

My Gold Severum is quite peaceful towards 2 new Severums it shares the tank with, my new Sevs are still only juvies and i think possibly male, im yet to discover the sex of my Gold though, difficult to sex at moment as its just coming to maturity because its started to get the flecks on its face and slightly on its body. No deffo not an Uaru, altho i can see why u may think it looks like one.

Defintely a Severum

yeah mines a nasty little guy sometimes. it goes in cycles. i keep him with a festivum, rainbow cichlid, gold gourami, pictus cats, a shovelnose, and a bichir. he ignores every one besides the two other cichlids. hes ok with the festivum most of the time and never really gets into it with him but ive seen him get into a liplock fight with my rainbow cichlid more than once.

i returned the nasty one and kept the smaller of the two, when i was in the shop the guy had what he called a pair of "red necked severums", they were spectacular! he reckoned they were wild caught and was selling them for £200!!.
after we both agreed i was`nt in that league i bought one of there offspring for a fraction of that price! it seems to be getting along fine with the gold one that was left in the tank and if it grows up to be as magnificent as daddy....i`ll be happy!

cheers all!!!

Mine is a Wild Caught Redneck Severum (see pic above), its a Juvenile but its starting to produce nice colours.

No way an adult would cost £200 +, max i would say is around £30 each.

yep he was deff after £200 for the pair!...maybe he thought i just looked stupid! anyway £6.99 got me a slice of the redneck action for a fine 2inch specimen so i`m a happy puppy!

in the lfs tank he was top bannana so never had his stripes on display and really did look nice, but alas he`s bottom of the pile in my tank and looks like the one you have. i`m sure he`ll rise up the pecking order to his former glory though!

My little gold severum is very aggressive as well. This really surprised me since they look so peaceful. He even chases around my arowana! Crazy little guy...

iv got the same type of prob with my greens ones..

iv had the male for around two years in a 38uk gal tanks with just a RTBS and a tire eal.
i noticed in my lfs teye had some in nearly the same size as him so i thought it would be nice to get him a mate.
so i got a girlfriend for him but every chance he got he chases her..

her fins looked pritty bad after the first night and it looks like she may have hole in the head

any ways im treating her with melafix and ive found if you chase him with a next and remove him from one end and release him at the othere he stays away from her for a fair while.. but she keeps hideing away

still i will sort out this problem.. or get a parot cich to bet him up lol
