Hy, I have a 400ltr tank, the stats are all ok and have been.

I have 1 Oscar 10", 1 pair of gold saums 8-9" 10 clown loaches 4" and 2 10" plecs

These fish have been together since they were an inch and they do tussle now and again but nothing serious yet anyway. three days ago I noticed that the male GT had a swollen eye on his left and thought that he may have knocked his head on some of the rock because he spends a lot of time trying to get his leg over and she hides in the rock and log arrangements at either end of the tank.

So I did a wc of a third and added some aquarium salt and I have done a wc every day since but tonight I have come in from work and his other eye is swollen too witch is worrying me.
I know I will have to but another bigger tank when the clowns grow but the ammonia levels are fine ? I currently run the fx5 external filter. I don't think this is popeye as I have experienced that in a molly before in my 200 ltr corner tank ??

I have recently had visitors and they slept in the room that the tanks in but I don't think that could be relevant although they left the day before I noticed it first ???
just cant figure it out if anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful thanks again
ally.

I agree the tank is overstocked.

Can you post full water stats please.

Any cloudying or whiteness to the eye.
Does the eye look red.
Any pools of blood in the eye area.
Any white specs or spots on the eye.

Could be an injury.

I would remove the salt with water changes as clown loaches don't tolerate it to well.

pH: 7
ammonia: 0ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm
nitrate: 15 ppm
tank temp: 30 oc

the largest 2 clowns are 4" the others are about 2"
Do you think its popeye ?
I didnt check the stats before I did the first change.
I do regular water changes every week 1 3rd
and the filter system is upto 2400 ltrs an hour and is well maintained.
I know I am going to have to get another tank for when the clowns mature and have already started enquiring about having one made custom so its bigger but I do keep a close eye on the ammonia levels
the gt is eating well and there is no signs of blood or cloudy eyes ????? no other marks except one thing his forehead dose look a bit swollen as ive just noticed that his two nostril like indents are quite large tonight also ??????? thanx

other than the bulging eyes he has no marks at all on him he is a fantastic colour his eyes are clear and his appetite hasn't changed he is even still trying to get his leg over ?

I didn't know clowns were intolerant of salt though ? I put a table spoon into the 400 ltr tank every 3 or 4 months just as a tonic. the clowns are all great but I do here you and I would hate to have any probs with them so thanx.

I read the article on popeye and hope thats all it is, Im going to clean the tank fully tonight.
clean the gravel and plants "plastic" and do a 50% water change. all I can think of is that maybe my guests have been enticed by the oscar to feed him and have done so after putting aftershave or something on maybe not that serious but a contaminate of some sort.

thanx again will update in couple of days

He's a lovely looking fish.
If it is an injury the swelling should gone down in a day or two.

Hy it's been 2 days now and still no change realy, he has been a bit sulky and is a bit off his food but he has been more active this evening. I think that its not as severe as it was but im not sure, after posting on the forum on monday I noticed that he had lost some of his slime coat. it had sort of dried and flaked off on a patch of him but that has righted now and is back also his eyes have raged bits at the sides and he had little blisters right at the edges but they have either burst or its getting better hopefully, will give it couple more days and update again any comments welcome ??? I did 50% water change and cleaned the tank & gravel but don't want to mess with the external filter now because it was only done 2 weeks ago. have included some pics from tonight. thanx ally....

Are the blister white or clear.
Do the blister move.

I think I would issolate him and try a bacterial med.

Do you have an airstone running. Does he sit near it.
Any bubbles beneath the skin.

yes I do have an air stone running but he romes the tank normally, at the moment hes staying out the way of the oscar but comes out to see me every time I look in on him. the swelling is showing signs of relenting and the first eye to swell has nearly gone back to normal but there are scars round the eye :( . I have a lot of hiding places in the tank I have a rock formation one side and I had a bog wood one on the other both were places that were tight to get in and out of but that's why they were there, im just wondering if hes got stuck or bolted when hes been inside and bashed his head ? his apetite is still down but hes still active.

thanx

Ok.
Glad the fish is showing signs of improvement.
Soak his food in garlic juice to stimulate his appetite. Also garlic is meant to boost the fish immune system.
