sorry if this has been covered before but i couldnt really find the info i was after or relating to my particular fish.

i have two oscars about 3 months old...about 2.5 - 3 inches long, 2 blue gouramis, and two hoplo cats (come to think of it i havnt seen them in days... :/ )

i am going away for 4or5 days... what do i do?

they eat like they havnt eaten in weeks already when i feed them twice a day!!! jumping and splashing like maniacs at my hand when its over the tank with food in it...

are they going to die? or try to jump out the tank???

im pretty worried....and i dont want to spend my holiday worrying about my fishies if i can help it....

please help

fish can servive up to 2 weeks with out food, i'm sure they will survive for 4 or 5 days, picking at the algae in the tank :)

they also make food for vacationing or weekend gettaways, i just bought some yesterday its called "holiday treats" it states that u would feed so much depending on tank size and # of fish, good for either 3 or 6 days

Be VERY careful with those holiday feeders. I've heard several horror stories about coming home to a lifeless tank with those. You're better off just giving them a nice meal before you go and letting them fast until you return.

And birdman, do you really have gourami and oscars in the same tank? How do they get along?

I only feed my fish every other day, so they are not used to getting fed as much as yours, birdman. I feed them the 2 days prior to going away and then leave them to it.

IMO it does more harm than good to have someone else feed them. :/

I have used the holiday food things once but I don't see any need for it.

I know the feeling or being worried when you're out of town for a few days. We usually go to Texas to visit my family once or twice a year for a week but we haven't been since we bought the 240 gallon and the others. Talk about being paranoid about leaving your fish! I was thinking about getting the vacation feeders because I didn't realize fish could go a few days without eating. After reading the previous replies I think we will give them a good meal before we leave and let them fast the rest of the time. Thinking about having our next door neighbor come in while we're gone to check on the tanks to make sure none of them have accidently sprung a leak while we're gone (one of my fears with the 240 gallon  ).

modernhamlet - yeah i do have to blue gouramis and two oscars....they get along good. but now the oscars and getting more aggressive with their size...so im going to have to keep an eye on them.

thanks for all your help guys...

what veggies? i have red tiger oscars.....will they even eat veggies?

and i havnt fed them in 3 days....they are going spastic. i fed them about 2 mins ago for the 1st time in 3 days and they practically jumped out of the tank to get the food.

.....im lost.... :( :S

what vegies>?

Usually shelled peas, zukinii or cuecumber (spelling?? ), all that has been warmed in the microwave so it will sink, works for most fish. I'm not too sure for oscars but you can always try. You might want to buy some rosies (baby commet goldfish) and put them in your tank. Oscars LOVE them

I was gone for a week a month ago. Someone was feeding my fish. I came back to the worst alage problems ever. Luckily I didn't get bluegreen alage. The moral of the story: Don't trust people to feed your fish. If I had known what would happen I would of told him to put a chunk of brine shrimp in there every 3 days; that way it would all get eaten.
