I am already stressed about how my fish will be taken care of while I am in Mexico on a mission trip the first of July......We leave on Sunday and come home the next Saturday.
If I have a friend stop by and feed my fish 1 time on Tuesday and 1 time on Thursday, will they be able to get by?

Thanks

MamaPish - I always tend to give a few extra feeds for 5 days before I go on vacation (ensuring that it is gets eaten and does not go to the bottom of the tank).

Fish in the wild can go a few days without food.

I would advise to you make sure your friend knows how much to give them, as I have found to my dismay that what a friend considered a pinch was more like a spoonful!

PS Which organisation are you going on mission trip with? A friend I know goes regularly to Mexico with Lifeline Missions

I'm going away in August to Israel, and what I have arranged is for my sister-in-law to feed my fish every 2 days. I'm going to put the required amount of food in one of those week pill boxes so she knows how much to put in,

Thanks everyone..that is a great idea about the pill box Thomas, I have several tanks and could get one for each tank.

My friend is an aquarist also , she is the one who got me hooked (no pun intended)  but that will make it easier for her.

Jazz.....We are going with our home church...this will be our 2nd trip, about 50 of us going.....we will be doing Vacation Bible Schools for the women and children in 2 different villages...2 hrs apart....one in the morning, the other in the afternoon....that totals 4 hrs of driving everyday on small bumpy dirt roads :S
I am the puppet director, and I also do balloon twisting, and other balloon stuff, and I usually end up holding a few babies!!
The men who go will be doing repair and construction on a soon to be orphanage, and continuing construction on a church. They will also be helping men in the villages with their vehicles, we will take lots of small supplies for repair/maintenance..oil,wipers,filters etc....
The orphanage/ mission house is located in El Faro, Mexico...a very small village of about 200.

Sorry for rambling...
I am just a bit excited :hyper: :hyper: can you tell!!

NP Tanked......
I just love seeing your posts.....
I am about to leave for the (not so) LFS to try to find a betta......your Suma did it to me.....I had a betta about that same color, but gave him away cause my angels were nippin at him...that is when I just had 1 tank....now that I have 6 I think I have room for for a boss!
Have a great day! B)

im not shure about out there in the states but if its for a week that ure going away then we have thease things... white shell shaped blocks that disolve slowly releasing food and oxigen into the water they are primarilly designed with this sort of situation in mind alltho im not shure if they do them with specialised food i would think that the fish would get by for a week if one of thease was in the tank. does anyone else know what im talking about? they would be of little use to me as i have to put in three different types of food atm. anyways hope your fish are ok while you are away.

I've been to Montezuma in San Louis Portacy (sp?) Mexico. We helped Brother Bob Smith (I really love his name) build up his dorms and bathrooms/showers, did a VBS in 2 towns and 1 village. I haven't been there in 2 years and was going back this summer, but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to, my church is having internal problems.

I have read where those vacation tablets can release things into your water, phosphates and such that can mess up your water parameters. I would be careful about using them as there has to be some binding agent holding them together. The ones I have seen look like plaster anyway.j

I think the idea with the pill box is a great one. You can pick them up really cheap at dollar stores and the like. They also have automatic feeders that release so much food a day but I'm not really sure how good they are as I have never used any of this kind of stuff.

plaster of paris..........oh my goodness!!!!!!!!! :hyper: :hyper:
That is awful....

I have been doing a lot of thinking on this....and I think I am going to start fasting my fish a couple of days a week...that way they will be more accustomed to going without as much food the week we are gone, I don't think they are in any danger of starving.....I have been told I have the thickest angels .......and they are....nothing dainty about my marbles, they are huge!

I have read that a well-fed tank can go up to a week without food, (mine have gone long weekends with no ill effects) so I'm not sure fasting them is the best plan. Just keep them healthy and I'm sure they will get by on the reduced feeding schedule until you return.

Have a great trip.

i think i have an idea tho im not shure if it will help. as well as thease measures you are talking about what if you introduce a load of live food into the tank that wont go off water flea are good for this as they will happily swim around untill the fish feels peckish. its not a cure all, but its an idea
