Hi BP.

This same question asked here - Glue.

Its about three posts down on the front page at the mo! :)

General consensus seemed to be no, but I don't see why with proper precautions (make sure its non toxic, soak it for a bit etc) you couldn't.#

Just to make sure though, stick with silicon (stick, gedit!!!  ) if its available where you are.

I say silicon, just because its watersealed, and i bet prolly stronger. If i were building the actual tank lol. Ornaments, I'm not sure myself, but for mine i have to use the aquarium sealant or they wont stick properly, lol.

I wouldn't, simply because hot glue does not hold as well as silicon. If you could ever get the tank to hold water, it wouldn't last long. Hot glue is designed to work best on porous materials and simply doesn't hold as well on non-porous materials, such as glass. Silicon is designed to handle things like glass, and that is why it is used.

I don't think hot gule leeches things into the water, but it won't create a good seal.

Sorry, i didnt read your first post properley BP.

To make an aquarium you would have to use silicon sealant.

Silicon sealant works on a molecular level - it bonds the glass on a level that keeps the water out, rather than just holding the glass together, if you see what I mean.

Also, if you consider a 50G tank is 190 L (assuming you are working in US Gallons), this is 190kg. The force on the side panels is an awful lot and the force exerted on the side of the tank would probably be far in excess of anything that a glue gun could hold together.

I would therefore change what I said before!

No "Hot Glue" WOULD NOT WORK at all for making an Aquarium, even if you Could Get it to Seal, the First Time you had your Stand Flex the Seal would Break and there'd Go the Fish and all.

Hot Glue can be used for Making SIMPLE Aquarium Decorations, to Hold plants and the like in Place, But it won't Work for Much Else.

Hot Melt don't Leech as far as I know, I've used it any number of times for different Projects and haven't had Problem 1 YET!!!

To Make an Aquarium or Leak Repairs, STICK WITH 100% Aquarium Safe Silicone Sealer, You won't Regret It... :kana:
