Aside from their brilliant color, fluorescent zebra fish are the same as other zebra fish in every way. This includes everything from general care and temperature preferences to growth rate and life expectancy.
Fluorescent fish absorb light and then re-emit it. This creates the perception that they are glowing, particularly when shining a black light on the fish in a dark room. For tips on the best way to display your new GloFish™ fluorescent fish, please visit our GloFish™ Display page.

I had some Zebra Danios as feeders for my Shovelnose cat before and they caused no problems. Technically a cold water fish but it can live in a community as many of us know.

They are about $5 a piece or so and supposidly available from PetSmart/Petco when they order fish from Segrest Farms.

I think I have a blacklight from my college days which makes them glow.

What'd ya think?

I think I wouldn't buy anything if it was genetically modified.

If you buy your fruits and vegetables from a supermarket, you almost certainly already do. There's a whole lot of genetic modification going on that people aren't even aware of -- the vast majority of it quite harmless, though. :)

Fruits and veggies are a different case IMO. Would you buy dyed food? How about dyed fish?

Dude if your going to argue about the morality check out the search function  weve talked about this before.

Blue lobster I think they kick Butt

Dude, I did. Searched Glofish, searched Glow Fish searched Glowing Danios and nothing. Maybe I didn't search from the beginning or far enough back. :dunno:

Anyway, as far as dyed or genetically modded food? Anything containing soy products has genetically modded bean stock. Go in the kitchen and look at your snack food, most of it has soy somethingorother.

Besides the genetics issue, does anyone like them?

I'm sorry, I was talking to Disco, it was a long while ago, and yes I love em!

personally i don't think they look as good as naturally colored fish such as rainbows, gouramis (even though they are inbred for their colors), etc, and actually take away from the appearance of just about any tank...that's just my opinion though :/

Well, most US citizens (at least) do this on a regular basis as well. Many non-organic fruits and vegetables are sprayed with dye to make them more appealing. I saw a list once, but the only thing that sticks out in my mind right now are oranges. Let's face it -- most oranges (from a tree) aren't really orange, they're much more yellow than we think they should be!

I have 2 glo-fish and they are a great addition to my tank. They are very active and eat like little pigs! :p I don't think they are died, the eggs are injected with a special gene to make them glow. They are basically a science experiment to create a type of fish that can glow in polluted water, so we can tell when our waterways are polluted and when they are clean. I believe they are sterile, so they won't breed successfully.

But these fish are very nice, and although they are genetically modified I believe they are still a fish and deserve a nice home. But remember, if you purchase a glofish some of the money goes to researchers to continue to do experiments to make the fish that will glow on polluted waters.
