I am in the process of cleaning up a tank, but have this white film at the top of the glass which goes all the way round the tank (about 2" deep) It looks like a very light coat of limescale which does go slightly clearer when wet but not clear enough  I have tried lemon juice, vinegar and even a commercial limescale remover  but still no luck. Has anyone come across this before and if so what did you use to get it off?

Does it fizz when you put vinegar on it? If not, then it is not limescale. If it is, you just need to be persistent.

I have this stuff in a tub called gumption, it is a miracle cleaner! You just smear it on (can do by hand, it has no fumes and as far as I know no toxic) wait a few minutes then scrub it off. It's great and is the only thing that has worked for that same buildup of stuff on my tank covers. I don't know what country you're from, it might not be available but its worth a look. HTH :D

Thanks for all the replies guys ;) This is still driving me mad! I can confirm that it is not limescale but looks exactly like the film that is left behind when the water evaporates, so why won't it come off? i have tried everything, even some toothpaste on a polishing bit from my mini drill set

Can anyone suggest anything else as i cannot set up the tank until this is sorted :(

Did you try a razor blade like Adrinal suggested. If not I would definatly try it.

Hi BLUE FIN :)

I wonder if you have hard water marks or if it is some other kind of marks that almost seem to be stains on the glass.

I have something like that on the back of a used tank and I never could get it off. It's not raised and the glass is smooth, but when it's filled it can easily be seen. I think it might be something caused by the plastic backing sheet that came on it.

No amount of scrubbing or vinegar will get it off for me. :S
