Thinking of adding a few glass catfish to my community tank. I've read that they prefer neutral to acidic water, my pH is consistently 7.5. Is this too basic for them?

Tank is 4 months old now, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels always zero. None of my fish are overly aggressive so I thought glass cats would be a nice addition.

Sorry, that should be "pH".

your tanks 3 foot right i'd say to small they are very delicate and nedd to be in a good sized group say 6 or more plus they'll clash swimming areas wid the gouramis and angels plus bby the way if your tetras are small they'll get eaten by the angels(their natural food)

edit to say they can get to 15cm long

Ta for your reply. I did wonder about the gouramis as the male does chase other fish sometimes.

I've heard that angels eat tetras before, but mine are very placid and show no interest in the tetras at all. They're more interested in pecking at the plants than in other fish. My neons have been in there a month now and I haven't lost one. :good:

I've kept glass cats now for over 2 years. They CAN be delicate. My pH has ranged as high as 7.5. The pH is not really an issue if they are carefully acclimated and it is STABLE. Also, as mentioned above, they like a little current and prefer to be in groups. SH

Ta for that. I only really want to put them in if they're going to be happy... and I might be getting a little over-stocked anyway. Maybe I'll save them for my next tank and select the fish more carefully. What's that condition I've heard of...mts? :hyper:

Oh, and if I were to go crazy and set up a second tank, can anyone suggest what good tankmates for glass cats would be? What do you have with yours, SH?

ive been keeping them for quite some time. my water is neutral, and they are hardy fish with great personalities (i can tell each one apart). while schools of six are preferred, ive had five together in a 36 inch 30 gallon since january and theyve thrived, ive never seen this species grow like this 8) you would prolly be fine, though ive never kept mine with gouramis so your tankmates would be my biggest concern. also something to think about, what type of lighting setup do you have? these fish prefer lower light situations, if its high light make sure theyve got hiding places with shade/cover to hang out in.
