1. How do you go about asking a lfs to take fry?
2. Can they sell the fry on?
3. I am not wanting money for my fry, but if i did what would they give me? (The fry are betta, guppy, swordtail, platy and corydoras catfish)

Ring them or call in, tell them what you've got and ask if they'd give you anything for them, ie credit for their shop.

Yes they'd sell the fry on else there isn't much point for them in taking them!

I don't ask for or expect anything for livebearers fry cos they aren't difficult to breed and the shop was always doing me a favour for taking them. But betta and cory fry I think it'd be fair to get some credit for them. It depends on how much they would sell for in the shop. I know someone who gets half the selling price for some of his fry.

Some places might just let you have another fish or two in return or maybe a tub of food, treatment etc.

i doubt a shop would be interested in fry tbh. the fish need to be at a decent size so its easier to sell, the bigger and more colourfull the fish the better.

i once use to sell a few of my lfs with green/gold stripe corydoras juvis for £5 each but they had to be a good size to sell on otherwise they will sit in lfs tanks using up tank space costing money to grow on. the lfs sold them on at about £10 each so doubled their money on each sale. the shop possibly wouldnt take fish from just anyone either as they dont know your history or set ups so cant risk diseases that could wipe out other stock.

its worth asking though if you need rid of them. have you put an ad in the classifieds on here? im sure some would get taken :good:

if you dont intend on trying to make any cash with the fry then maybe its a lot of work for nothing. it may be worth removing the female fish in your stock

let them grow to a good size - about a couple of months old and the lfs should take them no problem. I can't imagine any lfs taking newly born/hatched fry as they won't have the facilities to keep them while they grow big enough to sell. I put all my rescued fry in my small tank and let them grow up in there first then take them to the lfs. I got 2 free platies (in different colours to what I already have) for 10 2 month old platy fry.

okay thanks guys, i like my fish too much to get rid of the females, ill talk to them and see what age they would take them at :)
