my mate has had a marine tank set up for 2 months now. got rock fish in and all are fine. he bought a ele ear and it was fine, he done a 25% water change yesyerday, since doibg this it has shut up and gone a grey colour and almost looks like play dough. does this mean that it is dead?
the water was changed with ro water the same way that he has been doing water changes all the time.
does this put the other tank dwller at risk?

Doesn't sound good for the polyp, but its hard to say what else will be effected. How big is the polyp? If it is dying, I'd do my best to remove it, as you don't want it decomposing in your tank...

he went to his lfs with a sample of his water they told him that it was ok but the salt level was low it was at 30, they said that it was to low and to increase it to 32.
he did this and the polyp straight away has started to open up, and what looks like is sheeding a clear layer of something?

Yup, that'll do it. A salinity of 30ppt is far too low for most corals and invertebrates to live in. Prolly shedding a layer of dead skin/flesh. Hope it recovers

cheers.
so what should the salt level be for me for my nem?
doing alright at the mo,it ate a bit of musscle yesterday.

35ppt or 1.026sg whichever your method of measuring reads. Remember to calibrate using a DIY solution
