Giant Betta At Petco

If they are just being kept as pets then my personal opinion is nothing less that 5gal. It makes a nice compromise between space for the fish and maintenance levels/amount of space the tank takes up.

And just to answer the original post, giant bettas are just line bred betta splendens. You can breed for all sorts of characteristics, normally you see them bred for colour, giants have been bred for size :)
Treat them exactly the same as you would any other betta. :)

Yes, yes, yes and yes. All good info !

Neato, I have to check out Petco. If they are really giants, then super cool. If they aren't, at least they are still plakats, which I prefer to the long-finned anyways. Thanks for the tip. :good:

People, let's stay on topic, shall we? Giant bettas at Petco. At any rate, plakat male bettas at Petco. Very nice.

would you bput a goldfish in a 5 gal it will survive but its no were near the size the fish needs

Well, the analogy doesn't really work in this case as bettas don't get 2 feet long. But having said that, rather than bicker over whose fish are happier, can we not just agree that everyone has different methods of fishkeeping and so long as the fish are healthy, well fed, and in clean water withhold judgment on the methods of others. This has become one of the major turnoffs of this site for me. For instance, tom, you have a betta if I am reading your signature correctly in a community with *gasp* neons and rainbows (correct me please if I am reading it wrong), but some folks would have your head for that. I am assuming your fish is healthy and happy. What works for some, won't work for others. Fishkeeping is more instinct than anything learned once you get the basics. It is a matter of knowing your fish and knowing your water. Trends in fishkeeping change. What worked beautifully 30 years ago, will get you a hate thread on TFF these days.

As you might have noticed, I've had to cut some posts out of this thread for reasons that would have been obvious to members who have been following it. We expect members to post with respect and courtesy toward their fellow members. The posts I've removed were part of an unfortunate situation, so let's continue the thread peacefully.

Good fishkeeping practices involve management of many factors. Among them are keeping certain chemicals at a safe level, providing a safe environment in terms of tankmates, equipment, and decor, and supplying the fish with good and nutritious food. Aesthetics are a nice thing to discuss but not mandatory to keep fish healthy and free from harm. Please bear this in mind.

reet ill repost:

I saw in my lfs a few metallic giant bettas, they were huge and scary! they were plakat and about 4/5 inches long including fins, and they weent that long....very pricey though £34  I have a partial giant betta, it must carry the genes

but to answer your questions they dont need any special care as its been said before they are just line bred normal bettas, since they do get a bit bigger than your average betta maybe a slightly bigger tank? but it is debated what size on here...so go with whatever you think is right! as far as im aware they sont freak out, just act the same if they can see each other, flaring and whatnot

Hello, I found some giant bettas at Petco and was tempted to buy one but didn't. One was making a bubble nest in his cup! Anyway, I'm wondering if they need any special care, what their minimum tank size is and if a giant betta lived divided next to a normal one, would the normal one freak out? Thanks.

I went tonight and sure enough! There he was. :good: They only had one, kind of ugly one that looked icky. Called a "King Betta". It was interesting, they have more varieties than other places. I will return when they get new stock, as I am kind of picky. The one there just looked like an ugly, fat female with stubby fins.

Yup. All the Petcos I've been to recently had these King Bettas, and seem to have a lot more variety and colors than anywhere else I've been to. Anyway, I ended up not getting a king betta, lol. There was a blue betta with spotted fins that I needed to get, so I guess the Giant Bettas will have to wait a bit before they come with me. I definitely want one sometime, though.
