Giant African Shrimp

Yesterday on a trip to my LFS I bought a Giant African Shrimp.

It was an impulse buy as I had gone in to get a couple of corys and some bloodworm.

I just thought he was great and the owners said I did not need to do anything special to look after him.

I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with Giant African shrimps because I want ot ensure the little fella is well cared for.

Well, they are filter feeders and i think they like to be in groups. They grow up to 15 cm in length and since they are filter feeders, then they wont harm your fish. You need a current in the aquarium so they can feed. Thats all i really know.

these guys are a bit solitary. and "tend" to be active at night. they need plenty of plants and things to hide in. they are very peaceful, but they them selfs are vulnerable just after moult. probably means most cichlids, loaches and fish of that type, are not the best mates for them.

they do look odd after a moult, they flop around, without a solid bit in their body's. top addition to the right tank though.

mine sits inside a coconut shell and fans away,,i sometimes put a pleco tab beside her and as the current takes wee grains of it she fans like hell lol

yo good to see you IB. got a question. do you think ADF's will be good tank mates for a Vampire shrimp? i know the frog is safe with the shrimp, but is the shrimp safe with the frog?

sorry hun i have no idea,,i know nothing about frogs so i cant comment,,,can tell u 1 thing though,,i wudnt like to attack 1 of these shrimps as they can hold thier own pretty good,,,she gave my 7" cray a run for its money the other day lol

i bought another 1 yesterday and both are gettin on fine,,,the older 1 has moulted again and is looking fine,,i thought they might of fought but so far so good ..

Well I have had my shrimp for a month now and he is still going strong.

He still hides by the filter and I am yet to get him a friend but nevertheles he seems to be fine.
