Hi there, I just wondered whether anyone could help with one of many concerns I have having just built a new pond and having today transferred some 10" approx ghost koi.
Some backgound information first. Having started with a small pond kit with a fountain and waterfall kit some seven years ago, about three years ago I doubled the size of the pond and introduced some ghost koi, golden orfe, shubunkin and more goldfish. All went well and having used barley straw then last year I introduced a filter system.
I turned this off for the winter and never turned it back on as I started relandscaping the garden with with the intention of building more substantive pond. Just prior to construction we suffered a heron attack and lost all but the Koi and one goldfish and one shubunkin (plus a few stream fish my son had added in the meantime).
Following the attack the blanket weed set in and all the remaining fish hid away and the koi seemed very sleepy.
Concerned about the level of nitrates, today I transfered them to their new home a 10000 litre with 20 new 1" friends a little earlier than planned (I havent finished the edging yet!) but they seemed to have gone absolutely bannanas!
Having spent the first hour exploring the depths they are now swimming the perimeter as if to find a way out. Indeed the largest did end up over the side at one stage. (no edging) and since at times is still swimming with its back out of the water.
Any thoughts?
