I am wondering how I can get Romeo to flare, I have put a mirror in front of his tank and he just swims away

if he has a spot where he generally likes to hide/hang out, then put the mirror there

Sorry, this may seem to be a stupid question, but why would you want Romeo to flare?
Surely if your betta is happy, secure and thriving in your tank, why would you want to upset it?
Or is there an ulterior motive here that I am missing and the reason is way over my head?

He is timid and hides a lot so I want to see if it will get him out of his shell

Okey doke now I understand. How long have you had him?

David

Yes. When I got my second Betta (The second fish I really took care of), I tried making him flare but he didn't want to but he bit my finger hard when I put my finger in the water. But after a while he started to puff his gills when I put my finger in front of him so it takes time. (Now he's back to being scared

Are there any other fish in the tank? That could be causing him to be shy, especially if you've only had him a week, it takes a little while for them to settle

He is in a 2.5 gallon with just himself and a silk plant which he likes to hide in

He's not had time to settle yet, there's no need to make them flare, it won't change how shy he is. I notice you said A silk plant as in that's the only thing in the tank? If that is the case then no wonder he is shy, he doesn't feel secure

I will put a few soft plastic plants in

Leave the poor guy alone. I regard the mirror trick as being similar to banging on the glass to watch a fish dart around. It may make you feel better and put on a show for your friends but it is really not good for the fish's health. Bettas flare enough without being provoked. Mine all live to a ripe old age of well over 5 years with no such thing going on in their tanks. Think about how often you see a RIP post here with people who tell each other how to make their betta flare. Sorry folks but this is one of my pet peeves.

i agree you've only had him a week. Plus IMO its better when it happens naturally, mine hates when another fish goes in his betta log or when i turn on the lights too early. its funny and shows their unique personality. I have found nippy fish.com to be a great sites for betta's really helpful advice on decor to get for the tank and tank mates. (dont buy the floating leaf, i hear it can rust and be dangerous) .have lots of fun with your new friend Bettas are so funny and have such personality. A great fish. :good:
