Iv been to see a friend that works in a fish store and he's been keeping all different types of sevs for years. He said 55 gallons for one but could be kept in slightly smaller for a good while before being moved to the 55... I withdraw my earlier posts lol he also says he has a surprising amount of people asking about tank sizes for them because of how small they are when purchased and how slowly they grow compared to some other cichlids. Makes sense :)

though you might get a few nice fish once in a while, its better to give people the temperament that they're known for, not the temperament that they might have.

So true...

dbanner not sure if your taking this on board but its worth it.

Though i dont want to see your source as it may violate forum policy just want to clear up a source of confusion that you may have found. Heros Severus the true mouth brooding Severum gets to about 8 inches though there are variants that get bigger. IMO they need at least 60 gallons or more rather than a 40.

However the common Green Severus is called Heros Severus which is a common mistake as the Green Severum is H.Efasciatus which DOES grow to 10 - 12 inches depending on strain, gender and upbringing.

The only time I can think its acceptable to use a 40g breeder for Severums is for the purpose of breeding in a fish house - which is common but this is only for a few weeks at a time rather than long term captivity.

Either way Severums are big fish and big fish = big tanks.

Really sorry to the OP for ranting in here.

There are some really great suggestions in here like the Sajicas and Rainbows :)

I appreciate that, thanks for clearing that up. All iv done today is read up in them as i wanted to get as much info as I could for future reference. I didn't realise there were so many different kinds... Iv only seen ones labled as green and I think one was a red spotted?? Can't remember. 1 of the things that was confusing me is i know a couple of people that's kept thing like 2 dempseys in a 180 litre and they been fine. And another case of someone with 2 green terrors in a 200.... I know bigger is better in most if not all cases, but with these being similar sizes to a sev I thought 1 would be ok in a 180... Ah well I was wrong but thanks for the info :)
