my aunt's indian ringneck parrot died recently and now she has an empty cage which she has offered to give us for our budgie. its a pretty big cage and i have to check up on how far apart the bars are before i decide to take it or not. just a question though for the budgie experts:
would a new cage kinda traumatize my budgie? like would i be able to just chuck him in and he will not know the difference, or would i have to slowly introduce him to it?

pretty dumb question i know but i am curious and i want to do what would be best for him

Set the cage up and leave it near his cage for a day or so. Then put the two cages next to each other so he can see it.
You'll find if you can put his existing toys and stuff in the same place in the new cage he will adjust quicker.
It really depends on the personality of the bird.

You may find that the bars may be too far apart, especially if they were suited to a Ringneck :/

To answere your question, if you put the new cage in the same spot as the old one, they well hardly even notice the change. They notice whats outside of the cage more than the cage itself. They have great eyesite and watch everything around them.

I've had budgies for the last 25 years. I've been breeding them for the last 20 years. I've never kept a budgie in a cage. You should think about getting a nice perch for it. at first keep the cage next to the perch, set it up so the cage opens to the perch. until the budgie get used to the perch keep it in the cage at night. IF the budgie is older then you should always keep the cage by the perch, if they've lived in a cage for a long time, they'll never feel save outside at night or while eating.
I think caging a bird is creul. Birds are ment to be free, in the wild they cover hundreds of miles. They need to fly and budgies are very gracefull at it.
If it's never flown before it could get hurt, you should take it into a smaller room with no mirrors and close the shades on the windows to let them learn, they learn quick. Even the oldest budgies can be tamed, just be patient, but mainly it takes attention and time.
When I would take in a breeder that is old and never was out of the little breeder cage and never flew I would leave the cage open and place a perch on top of the cage. eventually they'll start coming out durring the day and sit on top, then I'll place a large platform perch next to the cage door. They'll stay on that at day and go into the cage to eat and sleep.

sorry to go on and on, but I feel strongly about this.

BryanG, cool to c someone with so much experience when it comes to budgies :)

Have you ever taught yours to talk? If so, can you maybe tell me if it's boys or girls that are easier to train, because I've always been told it's the boys, if kept by themselves.

I agree it's cruel to cage birds, but not all can be allowed to fly around in the house, we have Gouldian Finches, and they're just too small and 'untrainable'. They're going into an aviary, though.

True, Finches can't be out of cages, I ment parrots (including parakeets).
Yes, in my early years, i was a pot smoker, I taught one of my keets to say "smoke a joint" and "get me high" and "pretty birdy" also "do bongs". It's not as clear to understand as a larger parrot but yea, they can speak very well, But mainly males, I was told a female can, but I never got any of mine to.

I loved that bird, when I would come home he'd fly to me and give me kisses. while I'd be watching TV or listening to the stereo he'd sit on my shoulder or his perch and chirp & talk like crazy, saying all the words I tought him as well as many sounds that I also tought'm.

My favorite parakeet are the english parakeets, they are much larger, smarter and calmer. They make excellent pets.

 budgie mumbling "get me high".

I'd love to see a bird saying "Polly doesn't want a cracker, Polly wants a hash cookie".

Thank you btw, people always argue when I say it's the boys that are the better talkers. I love cocatiels, but I have to get something bigger, that can cope with 3 cats :/

I've had a few cocatiels over the past 20 years, but never got one to talk. Have you ever gotten one to talk?

No, but I've taught them to whistle tunes. I had one that used to dance to his fav music as well. Then one day he escaped & flew away, but came back every few months and sat in a tree outside my parents' house, we knew it was him because he would whistle this tune I taught him :D

i wouldnt keep my budgie on a perch cos we usually have doors and stuff open.

my budgie can and does fly lol. i usually take him out of his cage at least once a day and he is very well trained. although i think he would rather sit on my shoulder than fly around, hes very social and talks alot.

thanks for you suggestion anyway :)

I gave one of my tame keets to a friend when I had to move to a place that I couldn't have any pets. This was many many years ago, anway, he was on the 3rd floor and had a deck with a sliding glass door. He kept the sliding glass door open all the time, and the parakeet would never go out, like he knew where his food came from and didn't want to go out and get lost. He would sit on the back of the chair right next to the open door and look out though.
I didn't like it, I was always worried he would fly out and get lost, but, i did give my friend the bird so it was up to him.
I am not recommending you do this, I'm just telling a story,
i would never have a parakeet where it had access to the outdoors.

yeah i have a feeling that my budgie wouldnt fly away but i dont want to risk trying it lol.

lol hes sitting on my shoulder right now and blowing rasberries and making stupid noises
