Kara, I just rescued 2 bettas from Walmart this week and had to go immediately and buy a mini bow for one of them. I took the filter from my existing betta mini bow and also got a nice plant like you did. I filled it up, put him in and he has been fine. I have checked water everyday and everything is perfect. Do you have a tank you could get some filter media from or can you get some form wuvmybetta when you pick him up? I would do that rather than put the fish in with him. You could try ghost shrimp in place of the fish though. I think they are pretty compatable. Just give them something to hid in as they like cover.
