Hi all.

My roommate's parent's are giving away another one of their bettas (I got my first one from them too!) and as of right now it's camping out in a pickle jar while we try to decide where to put it  It's a female and I have only two other options on where to place it right now besides leaving it in the aforementioned pickle jar.
I could (and this would be the preferred choice) place it in my twelve gallon tank with my powder blue dwarf gourami and three cory cats, or I could put it the small betta double hex with the male betta. Although I would like to place the two bettas together, I'm not prepared really to deal with the inevitable fry that would follow this union at the moment ( I do hope to breed them at some point though). Also I think it would be WAY, way to cramped...

My worry is though that the female may not do well in the twelve gallon and that she might pick on her tankmates...or be picked on by them. In advice, would be helpful. Thank you!

2 bettas male and female cannot go together or they will fight unless u're really lucky or they r both ready to breed! i don't know about the gourami but i'm pretty sure the female would not pick on her tank mates......i had my girl with some pretty guppies. the gourami might not like her tho.......i don't know much about gouramis though i learning.......o ya i plan on putting my little female in with my honey gold gouramis.......tell me if it works out

Good to know. I wasn't to hot on that idea anyway.

I actually forgot to mention there was a third possibility, but I didn't think it was a viable solution. I do have a five gallon aquarium with a pair of yellow fancy tail guppies in it. I've always heard that bettas don't get along well with guppies for the most part. Something about they tend to beat the crap out of them because their long tails make the betta think the guppy is actually another betta.

the gourami might not like her tho

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I've was actually reading in one of the posts that Bettas and Gourami are related and this sometimes leads to fighting  Haven't heard anything else though... Heh, I least I know the corys won't mess with her

i have had bad bad experiences with male bettas and guppies but my female didn't care who she was with.......u can try.......they won't get 2 hurt right away if it doesn't work so u can always take her out......i would go with the guppy tank, gouramis can be evil or so i've heard

I placed the female betta in the five gallon tank with the guppies this morning. I don't think the guppies are two comfortable with her though. They've started hanging out out the bottom whenever she's moving around the tank. I haven't actually witnessed her do anything to them and none of them are bearing any marks or missing chunks, but I don't think either group is very happy with the arrangement. I think I'm going to get her a betta hex tomorrow...
