Get Rid Of Minimum 4 Letter Search Query

I think it a problem that comes with this latest version of IPB. Maybe Will could have a look at some codes next time he is there, and see if theres a hack to fix it. I agree though, very annoying, LOL.

It's not a problem but a prevention against abuse and overloading the system with too many queries. With a 4 letter minimum search, it reduces the strain on search returns. Imagine how many words, or parts of words would return a search based solely on 3 letters?

perhaps it's easier to just elaborate on searches than simply ich, ray etc

sting ray, manta ray, fish with ich and so forth

wait a second..

what were you doing searching for ''poo'' on here..

lmao
Stringy white poo... why else??? **Shifty eyes**

I see the problem here... a good solution would be to limit all 3-letter queries to exact word only.

I think even "fish with ich" won't work. All search terms must be < 3 characters long.

Even limiting it to a whole word leaves things like ich to return a query on. Ich is a word so commonly used it would tax the database beyond belief trying to return results on the thousands or tens of thousands of hits. There are plenty of discussions on it that you don't really need to do a search for it.

It's also not so simple to just limit it to exact words or alter the code to allow three letter searches. That's a built in function that would require hacking the code to alter and I doubt William has the time, expertise or desire to "fix" it.

Hi-

Thought I'd put my 2 cents in--I find that minimum 4 letters very annoying. Like when I look up info about fry, etc., I seemed to get around it by adding an "s" to any 3 letter word that's in my description....Which seem s to work most of the time. It's just hard if you're in a hurry and forget...frustrating...

Appreciate this is very annoying, but it is a function of the board- for the reasons which teelie mentions. The forum is rather large, and so the time taken and server load would be very large!

As andy says you can use google by adding the term- site:fishforums.net - not ideal but it would allow search for 3 letter words.

I never knew you could do that, maybe a sentance on the search page advising you of this would help people :)
