Hi - We have a pair of zebra in our daughter's fish tank (2 gallons) The female looks like she is ready to burst with eggs. We have her in a separate bredding enclosure. How long will it be before she lays the eggs?
she was with the male -- she looks like she is rady to burst - I am wondering if these fish (zebra) reproduce by external fertilization or internal fertilization. If they reproduce by external fertilization, when do I separate the male and female. My daughter would be very sad to know that mom and dad ate their babies
I am not a "fish" person -- I deal with horse and other four-legged animals

The-Wolf Thank you for you response. I was hoping to find someone who would "help" rather than make fun of my lack of knowledge on the reproductive characteristics of my child's fish. I appreciate your help. I gather form your website that zebra are external reproducers. Again- thank you
Usually a male (or two) slams the female around until a few eggs pop out (ouch! ) He then fertilizes them. If you want to save the fry, vacuum the gravel throughly 24-36 hours later, and keep the water at 76-82 degrees.
The difficulty in raising fry is the feeding. All the frys in my first batch died from starvation because they rejected fish food for fry (Hikari First Bite). Apparently, they didn't think it was food. My second (and later) batch were kept outside (in spring) in dirty watert, hoping that Nature will feed them. Luckily, most of them survived, but it's also the reason why my aquariums are over croweded.
