George's Nano Journal Mk. 2

I love the way you do the gravel. I think your little girl is tallented as well!
Is it best to use sand, fine gravel or larger gravel with this sort of set up?
What fish sre you planning to stock it with?

How long you going to have the lights on for then? Is the UG able to cope with a short photoperiod? Not used it yet.

Thanks.

Plants can grow well in either sand or gravel, so choice is normally one to suit individual taste. I prefer to see a smaller grain size in smaller tank, as this provides a better sense of scale. Imagine how ugly larger grains would appear in a small tank. For most situations 1-3mm grain size is ideal.

In this case the sand is purely decoration, and won't be covered in plants.

The ADA Aqua Soil is very nutrient-rich as is excellent for plant growth. It also lowers and stabilised pH (eventually) so is ideal for softwater fish and most plants.

Plants can be grown in plain substrates i.e. pure sand or gravel, but the water column needs fertilising more carefully. This then provides more risk for algae, especially with tanks with just a few plants.

A nutrient-rich substrate gives one more "room for error" where fertilising the water is concerned, so is ideal for beginners to the planted tank hobby.

I'm not sure on my stocking of fish/inverts yet. This will be decided once the tank is mature, and the aquascape has developed. I like to choose the fish to suit the aquascape, for me the plants and fish go "hand in hand".

As mentioned in the light spec, 6 hours.

I'm sure UG will "cope" just fine.

FYI I ran 4 hour photoperiods for the last week or so in my last layout - no CO2 either, just Excel. It was fine, as you can see from the most recent photos.

Oh right, interesting. Do you think I should stick at 6hrs for my nano then? Was thinking increase it slowly to 8hrs?

Im going to set my new tank up as a planted tank with plec and guppies/mollies.
I cant wait untill we see some more pics of your tank when it starts to develop.
Thanks, Joemuz

Depends on what growth you want, as well as how long you are viewing for.

I'm sticking to 6 hours because I want slower growth with minimal algae risk. Of course, as I get bored and want quicker growth to get to the "final" scape, I'll probably end up with more photoperiod and CO2. Time will tell.

I have my a final rock layout sorted now, and intend planting tonight. Camera batteries are on charge....

Ok thanks :)

How long did you eventually spend arranging and then rearranging the rocks in the end?

Hi George, I'm looking forward to this...I'm expecting a real potboiler of a thread (if such a thing can exist)!

Can you give us a better idea of what's going on with the excel (dosing, frequency, etc)? Is there some sort of formula to dosing or is it just as per the blurb on the bottle?

This sounds right up my street, I love it in Snowdonia (sighs, checks wallet and wonders if £2.34 and a dime some bugger's slipped into my change would get me on the Snowdonia property ladder).

All the best from Bill.

Thanks Bill. I will dose Excel as per the bottle, but as I will be doing 50% water changes every other day I will simply add 1ml per water change. I would only think about using this technique with nano volumes though, too expensive otherwise.

I have some "bad" news. I was finalising my rock layout last night and decided I was not happy at all. The layout itself was fine, pretty good I'd say but the slate is just too boring. So I'm waiting until I can get some more interesting rocks, and in the mean time I'll actually plant the UG in Emily's 33 gal. as it is doing so well in the pots alone.

So they'll be no updates for a while I'm afraid.

Sorry to hear that George ...... still I suppose that's the price of seeking perfection ;)

I have some spare foreground space if you can't fit all that UG in the tank

Looking forward to the Journal Mk.2.2

Thanks mate. I'm a believer in "if a job's worth doing.....". I've also learnt patience in this hobby too. A year or so ago I would have gone ahead regardless. But now I know what can be acheived, I like to give it my best shot.

Look forward to this one George, your right to wait, I just ordered a load of rocks from Germany earlier in the week, haven't arrived yet though, who would have thought eh, actually buying rocks, may as well though because good rocks are actually hard to find and I guess they can be used over and over, the right hardscape is V important especially in a nano.

George

Have you thought about using large lumps of slate? after all most of it comes from North Wales.

This is one I am putting in my tank, and immediately when I spotted it in a heap at work that should be chippings and not lumps I thought of your Snowdonia project.

I think it looks a dead ringer for a mountain peak, and you can find all sorts of this sort of fragmenting in slate.

This piece size wise is approx 4 inches high, 5 inches wide with a depth of 1.5 inches

Just thought Id say, I'm going to Snowdonia in a few weeks.
Should be fun.
