Geophagus Surinamensis

Was thinking maybe 6-8 Spanner Barbs if i could find some decent sized ones? Or maybe spotted Silver Dollars which don't get as big as their cousins?!

Spanner barbs are a good idea, usually quite placid also, silver dollars are also good, just watch for them dashing about and hurting themselves :good:

My Oscar is only 1.5" atm, but the spanner barbs would have probably grown an inch by the time the O has grown to 6.

Spotted silver dollars are easy to get for me, my lfs has a couple of tanks full. 3 for £18 though

I'd go for spanners then, and ouch  they are 3.99 each or 6 for £20 in my LFS!

They had some decent sized ones in, but knowing my luck they won't have when i go to get them.

Would you say 6-8 is a good number?

Thanks very much.

Yes the Steindachneri. Saw some at one of my LFS for £8.95 each and one of my local MA's had 5 for £30...

Would these be ok in with an Oscar in a 5x2x2?
I'd assume so, aslong as they were big enough not to be considered food, they're not a particularly aggressive species, their is inter-species aggression but thats standard cichlid behaviour, i didnt see any problems with other fish in my setup :good:

That's pretty much my experience with steinies too. Pretty calm with other species.

However, the aggression between conspecifics can be pretty intense. In a 5x2x2, definately only have one male. Females ... get at least 3 or 4, or even more. If you have less, once the females have spawned with the male and start holding the eggs/fry in their mouths, they will get terribly hounded by the male unless he has another female to woo at all times.

Great species though. Full of character.

5x2x2 ok with an oscar, pair of hrp's, trio maybe 5 pim pictus, 5 red humps and a shoal of spanner barbs?
