Gasping For Breath

OK did a 30-33% water change last night....fish reacted immediately and began to swim, eat and do fine/ As of this morning the fish were still not gasping again and no more were dead. I hope that were are through the storm. The water has been taking on a cloudy hue which I find very odd indeed. It almost looks like "new tank syndrome." I will keep you guys posted.

okay i just thought of something that could explain all this, what type of CO2 system do you use?. a yeast based system "overflowing" into the tank would explain the cloudynees and the gasping with them stoping gasping then restarting.
if you system is presurised then is could of been an over dose.
my fingers are crossed too

No CO2 in the tank. This is a rock and driftwood tank. That would make sense though if it had CO2. :)

just a jump here (i dont think this can happen, so dont get worryed)
if you have bogwood then then PH can drop, using some basic science is it posable the PH has droped dramaticly and the acidity of the water is damaging there gills? the water change would dilute the acid and raise the PH untill more tannins are released reducing the PH.

i highly dought that this can even happen but its an idea. whats your PH?

again - i dont even think this can happen but i have run out of ideas, please dont act on this until someone else responds who understands it a bit more about PH fluctuations.

Shang hi :good:

PH 7.0...set with chemicals. Things seem to be calming down....tank is now clear. Fingers crossed. I appreciate all your concerns guys and gals. I will keep you posted!

Changing water and filter media at the same time can wreak havoc.
If you are going to change filter media, it is best done on a different day as a water change, or hoovering the gravel.
If your filter has more than 1 element, only change 1 element at a time, and cut down on feeding 24 hrs before changing media, and 24 hours after, as it lessens the load on the Nitrifying Bacteria in the filter

Yep. I made sure not to nuke the filter media. Left the ceramic rings and changed the filter pads. All is still well. :)
