Fish Crazy
I am so disgusted I couldn't even post this when it happened a couple of days ago. I was doubting what happened, but I could smell a sulfer-like smell, and so did my husband and daughter.
What happened? I tried to replant (for the hundredth time) a couple of plants that won't stay in the sand. I then walked away. Some time later, my daughter walked into my fish room and asked what was the awful odor. It wasn't until I realized that my fish were dying that I realized what must have happened. Every last ember tetra died. My honey gouamis and peppered corys are fine.
I truly wanted sand for my corys, but this is the last straw. I could deal with the plants constanting uprooting, but now I'm afraid to replant them.

how deep is your substrate? What plants are they? A lot of plants can be attached to wood or rock to avoid uprooting. In my sanded tank (1 inch layer) I gently disturb substrate once every other week with my gravel vaccum where there are no plants. Sometimes having too dense or packed layers of sand will contribute to gas build-up
