You can always take Bear Mace to the LFS It wont hurt the fish tha badly but it will make any humans miserable.

That's pretty bad. Even the LFSs I go to to get the REAL fighters don't do that.

EDIT: And the fancy long-fins are the wrong type to fight, anyway.

some people have no clue. i have heard of kids doing this before with walmart veil-tails and it's pretty stupid. ignorance is all around though, a few months ago i was watching a thai film called "dang bireley's and young gangsters" and was surprised to see what i believe to be the first instance of betta fighting on film (i've seen anyways..), what was lame about it was the fact that the two bettas were both veil-tails, not authentic fighters as one would expect
