Because of Galinda's columnaris infection I've been aerating her tank 24/7 with airpump/stone, as well as salting/medicating etc. and yesterday I was surprised to see her approaching the rather rapidly-bubbling airstone and, after a preliminary inspection, diving into the upward flow. She let it carry her a bit, then backed out, then dove in again. She must have done this six or seven times before finally swimming off- she was treating it almost like a carnival ride, and she's done this twice since, that I've seen. I wondered if it might not soothe the tension in her stomach from the constipation, or something.

Has anybody else seen any of their bettas not only tolerating water filtration but actually appearing to enjoy it? I would be very curious to know.

Why hello, and welcome to my tank. Let me show you my new hobby!

Whee!

ETA: The stress stripes in the second pic are always visible no matter where in the tank she is, so I believe they're from the general infection/treatment, not the water ;)

Well a girls gotta get her kicks somehows lol . That's cute.

It just cracked me up to watch her. She's under her hanging plant right now but every now and then she'll go and 'exercise' a bit. The only other betta I have who plays with currents is Sarima- she'll blow a couple bubbles and spit them directly into the filter output, then she'll hover and watch them bob up and down. I think it glorifies her sense of control, or something

Neither of my tanks have filters but when I syphon the new water back into Jeremiah's tank after a water change, he swims in the current which is quite strong. At first I thought he was scared by it but now he knows what I'm about to do and waits for the 'ride' to start. :p

Whatever makes them happy is fine by me. :)

 I'm glad she's not the only one, then. I guess I just got so used to thinking of them in terms of not liking currents that it took me completely by surprise to see her seeking it out! :p

A few months ago when before my tail biter started biting and I had to take him out of his 2.5 to a 1g in the 2.5 it came with a whisper power filter made for that size tank and he would try to get in the filter output. It would be funny I would be watching him and all of a sudden he is trying to get in the filter and he even tried to hold on to get in by biting the filter cartridge to hold on. :p

I had to cover the outputs of my tanks with aquarium foam because so many of my fish have tried jumping up into them. I don't get what makes them do it, but they do love to jump into the current!

yeah my betta is the same? Swims against the current right up to the top then lets it push him down again. Maybe we have Extreme Sport bettas!!! :flex:

Yep my 3 girls in my large cummunity do exactly the same. Often haning around the filter and riding the current  - though the tank is plenty big enough to avoid any current entirely if they so wish.

Well, like we rub our tummys when they don't feel good, it could stand to reason that Galinda is using this as an a way to provide that relief. Also, she may just be getting her kicks! At least she's not sulking, and that's a reflection on you. Great work, for making her sick time fun! :D I hope she feels better.

Thank you very much :*) As to an update on Glinda herself, she's back in her jar now; I'm going to give her a day or two to recover from the medication and then start her on the epsom salt bath for her constipation; hopefully I'll have her all healed up by Thanksgiving weekend! :D

ETA: That's the Canadian Thanksgiving, of course; weekend of October 10th. Just in case anybody wondered why it would take me 'til November to fix her . . . :p
