Fw Colombian Shark

Hello all,

I am a newb to all of this, but I now have a 55gal tank with a Colombian Shark. I understand that they will become full marine fish when mature, but what will happen to this fish if I leave it primarily FW?

It will start to become lethargic and uninterested in food, then it will become prone to diseases, particularly bacterial infections and skin related problems, then it will die.

They need salt in the water even from a young age, they are not freshwater fish at all.

so this fish NEEDS to be in a SW tank eventually? or can it be kept at a 1.005 to 1.010 SG for it's whole life?

Brackish water is fine, prefferably in the upper scale from 1.010 upwards.

Umm I believe this fish does start out in freshwater and as it matures should be in brackish.
I have two of these, and I do know that they are brackish fish, but are sold as freshwater to begin with.. what constitutes mature ive never figured out, as no sites mention it, but I had mine in soley freshwater for a year at first , and in no way acted sickly or lethargic. Although there is a fair amount of salt already in our water and I think thats why the were ok, as I have had friends who have bought them and couldnt keep them alive for 2 weeks. They are stunning fish, but yes, they do have to be brackish..
