Funny problem

Hi, Im a newbie! Anyway I am setting up my first tropical tank.....it is a ten gallon moby dick. I have added some aquatic plants that look really good however the tank now smells and when I tested it for ammonia the level was really high. The problem is that I don't have any fish in there I am doing a fishless cycle so there shouldn't be any ammonia and I have no idea why....... please help!!

If you are doing a fishless cycle you should be adding ammonia, otherwise your bacterial colonies will not develop.
