I've had my pleco for a little over 5 months now. At first he would hang on the walls or filter for weeks, literally. Then he started to move at night, and I would come in and turn on the lights and he would shoot back up on the filter. About a week ago he started to come down during the day. He began to eat the left over food on the bottom. So yesterday, the 24th, my pleco ate his first algae wafer 5 months after I bought the discs and him. Lol I'm so excited.
:D

What kind of plec is he? Mine used to clean algae from the glass untill he realised it was much easier to eat the food given to him. Now he won't touch the algae

mine was the same way at 1st for a couple of months, he was always so paranoid that I was going to "get him" or something, he always hid everytime I walked by the tank and he never ate ,even though we walked on eggshells around him  , as to not disturb him or scare him, but after about a week of feeding algae tablets at night (luckily my snails cleaned them up) he realized they were intended for him and finally ate,now just like gad's plec ,mine just lays around at night waiting to be fed and leaves the "window cleaning" to the snails
But he's comfortable enough in his surroundings that I can even stick my hand in there to replant a plant he uprooted and he'll just lay there because he knows he's home  , I remember how excited I was the 1st time I saw him eating a tab, I think I almost cried  , and now he even charges out to get a nibble of the shrimp pellets while everyone else is eating, and boy do they clear out of the way

You think thats funny, one of my plecos (sailfin) doesnt even like algae wafers any more. He's got a taste for cihlid gold pellets. Because these are floating ones, as soon as i oped the lid to feed, he comes shooting up to the top (i even managed to stroke him a few times :)) and then grabs a few floating pellets and eats them

Wuvmybetta, what kind of snails you have in your tank? I have 3 little pond snails that came with the plant I bought 2 weeks ago and within 2 days, eggs were all over the tank!!

And to stick with this thread, my pleco died after coming home for 2 days. :( I still don't know the reason (we checked the water's in good condition, so's the temperature etc)

Once our plecs got a taste for bloodworms and beefheart they wouldn't touch the algae anymore.

If that's the tank that your Loaches are in I believe they will clean up the snails in no time.

I read from a book containing all kinds of disease of tropical fishies, saying that snails will carry some parasites and will pass on to the fishies. Is that true even for the newly hatched ones?

Sorry all, not for sure what kind of pleco he is. I though he was just a regular plecostomus. Lol hes starting to eat the sharks bloowworm now too.

Before my pleco started eating, my sharks put out plenty of waste. Now that pleco has started eating, the bottom of tank is literally covered in feces. Is this a problem? Can I do anything? I'll be getting a bigger tank in the coming weeks. hopefully it should help. B)

Could someone post a picture of their pleco, I don't know what one looks like and they sound very cute and amusing??

Thanks,

If i had enough room, i'd love to have a tank full of plecos. They are cool fish

Plecs are often sold as algae eaters. When I first started keeping fish, I went to my LFS and asked for "something to get rid of the algae" and was sold Simon (my plec  ) He's been with me for a few years now and has grown from 1.5 inches to about 8 and still going strong. He's messy, lazy (hasn't cleaned the algae for ages) and still very shy, but I adore him   He uproots my plants, grazes on them till they're nearly transparent, knocks into things but I wouldn't be without him. If you want to see plecs, visit www.planetcatfish.com and they have a really excellent collection of all kinds of catfish, including plecos. IMO no tank should be without one :)
