No-one has died or anything, I just a funny feeling about my tank, not sure what is going on, 2 of my platies keep hanging around the top of the tank (not gasping) just resting up them, one of then lies on the bottom and my 4 neons are hanging about under my bogwood arch huddled together.

I checked my stats and everything seems fine.

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 20 - is this too high, should i do a water change?

Zebras and male guppy are swimming round happily.

Should I do a water change just in case??

I did have a move around around on Sunday, added some large pebbles and an airstone, would this have upset them??

Any thoughts please??

Thanks

Elaine

Nitrate levels very low. Far below danger levels.

Anything recenty added to / changed in your tank?

The only thing I can think of is a bag of new pebbles, airstone, i have a carbon pad filter underneath the other filters (trickle feed filter with gap underneath) could this have any effect? but that has been a week or so. I closed down a small tank which had a male guppy in, I moved him over.

Temperature is 25.5 degrees.

A couple of the neons seem to be panting a bit, they are all huddled together down low.

I just went over to the tank and all the fish rushed to me thinking I was going to feed them but the neons stayed below.

Maybe i am being paranoid and they are just resting......

Would you do a water change??

Thank you for responding

Elaine

Your stats are fine. I would not change water. Best thing I think... leave them alone!

Could be that they are resting. Good that they are in a group though although perhaps they are stressed for some reason? How long is your lighting on for? Is the tank in a busy area?

Give them a rest perhaps. Feed them, 5 mins, light off, let them settle. Just an idea, let others chip in now.

Andy

Note: carbon pretty much useless after 2 days. Only use it to clean water after using meds or the such like.

Hello Andy

Tank is in lounge but has been no busier than usual and they have been in this room for about a year.

ooooo I have been leaving the lights on for most of the day (which is more than I use to do) as my plants at the back were struggling and I wondered if that would help the plants, would this stress them out???

My bogwood tints the water and I was told the carbon will help but I think the white floss filter is probably better with this.

Will go and feed and see if the neons come out and will turn the lights out for the night.

Thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate having your thoughts on this.

Neons came out when feeding and I noticed that 2 of them are very fat, like pregnant looking fat??

What would it mean if my fishes gills seemed redder, but again not sure if this is because I am looking too hard, haha

No didn't replace substrate, just added some large pebbles in one corner, on top of sand.

Thanks

Elaine

Pregnant or... dropsy. NOW: start a new thread entitled, 'Are my fish pregnant or do they have dropsy'? in the emergencies section. Not much you can do if they have but cross your fingers. Hopefully forum member Wilder will be on the case. Hell, possibly 100% fine but you're describing something which is raising alarm bells in my mind. Sorry (really sorry) to worry you, hopefully unnecessarily, but better safe than sorry. I hope you agree?

Carbon better at getting tannins out. Floss would be useless imho.... strange you say the opposite. I will tell you how to get tannins out if you want but discolouration of water with tannins is a-ok for the fish. Infact some ppl like this natural look for some types of environments.

Was just having a read up on dropsy, looking to see if I could see their scales, I did wonder whether I have been overfeeding, constipation. I saw that someone said shelled peas, is that just frozen peas, take the outside off??

Thanks

Elaine

Yeah - just boil the frozen peas off as normal and then peel the first layer and discard, then crush the rest into mush and drop into the tank - my fish all love it.

just give them a little prehaps?

Yep, fish love peas! Wish my kids would eat them....
