Fungus; Please Help

Something happened...

I went to try the salt yesterday, and the fish, well, he doesn't look like he has fungus. I think its something else. Unless its just some stage in the illness. Maybe I'm looking to closely.

The film on him didn't get puffy or cottony. The film turned into something else. I think it is eating his scales away. I don't really know how to describe what it looks like, but it doesn't seem to match anything on the illness descriptions... though it looks a little like many of them...The fins are all gray around the edge.

He has a big patch on him, the outline seems a little depressed, and is of a lighter color than the rest of him and very smooth, like the scales are gone. the middle of the patch is slightly different in color too, and its a strange texture; This patch of scales doesn't look like his other scales. the scales there look raggedy and almost shredded. the shreds are hanging off him slightly. Almost like the scales are rotting right off him. Is there such a thing as scale rot?

Even more confusing (at least to me), he looks better than he has in days! He is swimming, breathing, eating, acting fine; even begging for food like he always does when he sees me coming!

Maybe it is his slime coat, maybe he is trying to fight off the disease or problem himself. Sounds like a very bad bacterial infection if anything. I suggest trying a bacterial med and quick. Sounds like he's getting worse and worse though possibly.

I am getting medication
Should I change the water to get the salt out before I use the treatment?!

Hi there is actually a disease called velvet..it is also a fungal disease, do a search for velvet pics online....see if this is similar. But I must say it does sound like columnaris to me. Pimafix and Melafix will also help with velvet. Treatment should be ok with your other fish.

It never hurts to do a water change. Salt should not effect much though, but a water change would be a good idea. As when treating the fish you cannot change their water for a few days usually!
