And so...? Did you ever put a betta in with them? I'm afraid it would eat the adults as well. ? I really don't have room for another tank.

I had bettas over the years as well. Both combined in a community tank as solo. As long as if a betta can create it's own spot in a tank, there's not much to worry about. But of course, it also depends on with what kind of fish you're combining a betta in one tank.
Betta and barbs go well. If you want to combine them with guppies, I would suggest to take short finned guppies.
