Hi !

I want to feed my fish a variety of food. So far, I've tried flakes, pellets, wafers, cucumber, zucchini and bloodworm.

Lately, I've read a few articles about feeding frozen shrimp from the grocery store to tropical fish.

Does anyone have experience with frozen shrimps from the grocery store? Is it safe?
I'm confused about what kind of shrimp to buy. Cooked, uncooked? With shell or no shell?

A lots of company add sodium to their products..would it be safe to buy shrimp with high level of sodium? It's hard to find products with low sodium.

Any comments would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I feed mine the pre-cooked in shell kind, but I take the shell off. I've also fed raw salmon chunks to some of my larger fish without a problem.

They really like them.

Thanks for your reply Mikaila :good:

Do you buy a brand or are they standard shrimps from the seafood department?

Any reasons why you buy pre-cooked instead of uncooked?

Just buy fresh frozen raw prawns/shrimp with their shell on. Fresh frozen means they are caught and immediately stuck in ice water until they die. Then they are frozen in bags. You keep them in the freezer and take one out, defrost it, peel the shell off and chop it into small pieces, (I use a pr of scissors for this). Feed a few bits at a time until the fish are no longer interested in it. Then remove any uneaten food from the tank.
Prawns/ shrimp is fine for fish and makes a great food for conditioning them and bringing out natural colours.

My Mom buy them for meals, I just steal some and keep them in a Ziploc baggy. They are the packaged kind, but I don't know what brand.....

Pre-cooked is going to be better since fish don't eat cooked foods naturally.

With that said, I've fed my loaches and rainbowfish the miniature cooked & peeled salad shrimps before.

If I'm having fish for dinner, I usually throw a little scrapings/slivers into the tank too. They seem to like it quite a bit.

Thanks for your advice.

It will be cheaper and it will be yummy for me and my fish :good:
