I have a community tank and none of my fish like frozen daphnia - they all take it in then spit it out! They dont seem too keen on frozen micro worms either but love all the other frozen live foods.

Hi Gilli,
just guessing here: have you tried live Daphnia first? In my case, I had the clear impression that making them understand that "that thing" is food, is the first step: therefore, seeing it alive and moving may trigger the thing.

On the other hand, if they take it in, and then spit it, it may well be a problem of taste! I read somewhere in the forum form a guy, apparently using bloodworms that had been de- and re-freezed at the shop or during transport, and his fishes just didn't like them. Fair enough, I say!!!

Cheers,
Maurizio

I agree. If they eat it then spit it, I'd say they DO recognize it as food, but don't like it.

Try with live daphnia to get them to at least get used to it, and if they still don't like it... well, no big loss. If, as you say, there is plenty of other food they will eat just feed them that food.

My fish spit it out too!
They love frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms but spit out the daphnia.
They don't spit out the live daphnia tho!

Yes its my guess that either daphnia doesnt taste nice when frozen, or has no taste at all. trouble is on some of the frozen mixed foods its always included.

None of my fish will eat it either, i've seen some other members say the same as well. I recently chucked mine out and got them brineshrimp instead, they really like it!

Mine do the same. I feed cyclops instead as most of my fish are under 20mm

If they dont like daphnia, dont feed it or the mixes :p there are so many choices out there! :good:

Brine Shrimp
Brine Shrimp + Garlic
Brine Shrimp + Spirulina
Mysis
Krill
Red Mosquito Larvae/Bloodworms
Black Mosquito Larvae
White Mosquito Larvae
Tubifex
Chopped Prawn (get in cubes as well)
Cyclops (for really small fish though)
Rotifers (for really small fish though)
Beefheart (dont personally recomend it at all!)

And I am sure there are many others!

Seems to me like they should stop selling it frozen if no ones fish eat it!

I feed it to hundreds of fish every day and they love it :p you all have weird fish ;)

^^ lol, agreed, all mine eat daphnia, quite happily!

You may have hit the nail on the head earlier. It could happen like this: Some fish shops order the stuff via the mail. It comes in a styro box with cold packs, but by the time it gets there during the summer months it may be defrosted (like if it sits in the back of a delivery truck in the mid day heat waiting to be delivered.) The shop re-freezes it (a no-no) and sells it anyway. The fish don't like the bad food and spit it out.
