Frontosa Cichlids

hey guys i have a lovely male frontosa 5" and hes growing well i was just wondering if any of you have them, can i see some pics also i was wondering how quikly they grow and what ishould feed them to achieve this as my one dislikes cichlid pellets and only likes flakes and oscar food.

I had one that was about 12". It's funny, he only ate flake food, too! I don't have any pictures of him though , but they don't grow too fast, and they don't grow too slow, if that makes any sense. They're fun fish. Mine was the most shy fish in my tank. I gave him to a friend about a half year ago (he had a bigger tank).

my burundi male "Big Blue"

He gets HBH cichlid attack and spirulina crumbles,treats=( not daily, krill, meal worms, shrimp, romaine, zuccini)

nice pics, i have 3 blood parrots, 2 are 8" and one 5",
also my 2 gold severums ( other tank ) are about hand sized, yours will go a lovely deep orange/red colour, mine used to look like yours too, now they are very bright.

am i correct in thinking there are diferent forms of frontosa cichlid ?
also, what size in " is the frontosa in your pic, because the males hump developes at a smaller age, while the females smaller hump developes slowly over time.

Nice to know about the severum - it does look like it's been given a fright it's such a pale yellow/gold, lol.

There are apparently a lot of different forms of Frontosa - check out http/cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=9 - really must ID my one.

My Front's about 4" at the moment - only had him/her about 6-7 weeks or so - maybe it's a female then if the hump develops more slowly.

He/she's completely dug up the black gravel in the tank - has made itself it's first home in one corner by piling up all the gravel around it to about 3-4" above the normal level. I come down some mornings and it's started elsewhere

mine is a little over 4" and he got a practicaly square head fro mthe side, im sure yours is a female or a late blooming male, but for the moment i would defo say a female. thansk for the link

sorry to differ but it isnt as easy as looking at the nuchal hump to tell which is male or female.both sexes have humps, and theres no standard for whos is bigger males or females.

mannerisms in a group can give you a hint but,

venting is the best way 100%

Ah-ha - not sure that I'll go down the venting route, so will just leave things be, him/her I really don't mind.

the fins are a good indication of sex too, the males are longer than females (dorsal and anal fins).

Yes these are all signs, fin, humps, behaviour etc. But it is just as likely that is is male, you can never tell without venting for sure....smaller fronts often turn out to be closet males that just havent developed because they are not dominant, while females can also be the dominant fish making you think it is the alpha male!

KimA, judging by the face mask of your Front I would say it is a burundi (thin bar that goes straight through the eye with no mask of dark colour on the face)

Need to take a few more up to date pics of my colony as the ones I have are a year old and they are much bigger now! I would also recommend any of you that have fronts to get a good group of them as they colour up much better, and are far more inquisitive and outgoing when with their own kind.

Oh, and also in answer to your first question, fronts do well on high protein pellets rather than flake. I also feed mine frozen food such as prawns, bloodworm, artemia, krill and a cichlid mix. They are predators in the wild so a high protein diet is good....

Thanks Jump - I'd been looking at the Cichlid forum to identfy my Front, but had only got halfway through due to a certain 3 year old's constant interruptions, lol !
