It seems the heater in my 75 gallon tank short circuited during the night and heated the water up so much it wouldn't even register on the thermometer. I had around 23-24 cichlids in there, many that were around three years old that I have raised up from fry to nearly adult size. All of them were dead except the two syndontis catfish and my exasperatus. Or so it seemed at first. As I removed the carnage from the tank, I notice near one of the caves a few tiny little specks swimming around. I look closer and I see even more, 13 of them in total. It seems that one of my yellow labs, which was holding, released her fry as she died, and somehow they survived the night, even though the temperature of the water had to be well into the 90's. So after cleaning the tank I took the auratus and lelupi I had in my "exile" tank for cripples and "those who do not play well with others" and put them is the mostly unihabited 75 gallon tank, and put the 13 fry into the exile tank which I will now be using as a growout tank. As sad as I am over the loss of my most treasured cichlids, it's nice to know that they will live on a little bit through the miracle fry that somehow beat the odds and survived the night that should have killed them, as it did their parents.

awwwww, sorry you lost loads of your fishes but that's so cool about the fry surviving :good:

A heater going is always bad news, they always seem to fail in the middle of the night or when you're not around. Sorry to hear the bad news :( but i'm glad about the fry :)

Well the good news is that the fry are doing well in the growout tank, are eating like pigs and I swear they get a little bit bigger every day. The exasperatus is doing excellent as are the two syndontis catfish. They seem no worse for the wear. Thanks for the condolences.....
