I have a male crowntail betta (named 'Thai Tiam!') in a 3 gallon tank on his own. It has a heater and a light but no filter or pump. What fish could I buy to be his friend that would not require a filter or pump? Any suggestions welcome! :)

:D .......Anybody?
I did think about 1 African Dwarf frog but I know nothing about them so if this is a big no no then plz say so. Idon't want any dead fishies - or froggies! I also thought about 1 or 2 ghost shrimp but I think they look a bit scary and I would start panicking thinking they were dead every time they shedded their skin!

You could put a frog or two in there  I wouldn't go with shrimp, most bettas at some point will notice the giant entree at the bottom of their tank

So many times I thought my ghost shrimp was eaten but it was actually just a shell after molting. Sorrell is right, NO ON GHOST SHRIMP! I bought two....one jumped out (somewhere) and the other picks on the male betta and vice versa. I never had frogs before but from what i heard, they are pretty good companions.

Bettas aren't a social species, and therefore really don't need (or want) a friend. Most will see a friend of any type as a threat to their territory, or something to compete with. Furthermore, with no filter, two fish is going to quickly soil the tank if it is only 3 gallons. I'd say for one betta, the tank size is fairly adequate, but for multiple fish, you might want to go bigger. I'm sure your betta will be happy alone in his three gallons either way ;-)
