I would just like to add on this thread that it is well known that bettas have very varied personalitys and many of them don't take well to having tank mates whatever they may be even if other bettas may get along with them- with my betta for example, he even attacks the resient apple snail in his tank and fish tank mates are completely out of the question with him.
Its important to find the most peaceful fish for your betta but at the same i'd advise you make sure that any fish your betta does not get along with have some near they can go to fast whever it be the petshop you got them from or somone you know who takes good care for their fish and has the space for some extras and will fit well into their tank.
Bettas mostly leave alone corys, otos, dwarf frogs and things like ghost shrimp alone but not always so just keep your eye out for any agressiveness the betta could show towards his new tankmates.
Try to add new fish or 2 once a week at most when the tank is ready and make sure yo acclimatise them to the tank for at least 30mins+.

Hey, didn't read this entire thread, but I'll add. African dwarf frogs rock. Up front. If you get some, just make sure they're eating ok. A good trick is to put their food (hbh frog bites have never failed for me) in a cup of dechlor water and suck it up in a syringe or turky baster (one that is just for fish and frog use, obv.) and then squirt the food near the frogs so your betta doesnt get to it first. This might take a couple days for your frog to catch on, but it should. And, if all else fails, tak the frog out of the tank every few days into a seperate container and feed it there. One of my frogs will jump to the top of his tank and eat the food from the surface, while my other frog waits for the food to fall down. It all depends on the froggies.

You could, also with that tank, buy your betta his own tank (1-5 gallon bowls work great) and if you still like bettas, maybe make the 10 gallon tank into a female community, or go a whole different route and keep guppies in it or something. If you did guppies that weren't the fancy tailed ones, and didnt grow as big, you could put a good ammount of them in there. (if you did all males I'd say you could fit 8 in easy.) if you make it mixed gender, make it a 1:3 ratio, male to female. And be prepared for fry.

Or, you could divide it in half, and keep 2 male bettas in it, and a frog on each side.

I have a large purple colored betta who I had to move to his own bowl it wasnt him nipping the others were nipping his back fins so badly he was hiding all the time. nOw he is happy in the plant bowl :)
