Hi there,

I am looking into putting some interesting snails in my aquarium.

Wat different types can i have being a tropical tank?

thanks

If you head over to the invertibrate section of the site theres a load of into on snails there :) might make for some more informative reading.

I second what SJ2K said, but I would like to warn how snails tend to multiply. Just be warned in a few months time you may be back on the site asking how to eliminate a couple hundred snails from your tank. ;)

Joshua

As far as multiplying is concerned, a safer bet would be to get some apple snails. They need two to 'tango' so to speak and lay their eggs above the waterline, thus it's easy to remove any unwanted eggs. If underfed they can nibble plants but I have had many of these snails and none have eaten my plants as yet. You can get them in many colour variations too :D

You might want to put a calciem supplement in your water if you do get snails. They need calcuim so thier shells can grow peroperly.

That being said, I've never had a problem with that personally. Adding calcium supplement to water that is already alright, might throw things off. It'd be better for him to check his levels before he ever considered that, which, I doubt he will have to.

Basically, your choices are mystery and apple snails. Nerite snails are also fine, as they need saltwater for their eggs to develop properly but they do fine in freshwater. They will leave little trails of white specs (eggs) around the tank but the eggs just won't develop.

Just about any other snails will reproduce like mad (MTS, ramshorn, pond).

Just keep us updated on what you decide on so we can help you as much as you need us :). Don't hesitate to ask.

Joshua
