While I was away my wife and my son added two freshwater shrimps to my aquarium!!

At first I said "WHAT SHRIMPS, are they edible"

But after watching them I released that they are quite fascinating little creatures.

Any way what I would like to know is what do they do? and is there any risk from either them being eaten or my fish being eaten.

Hi - they eat algae non stop all day, i have about 10 in with Angels, tetras, gouramis and Rams and non have been eaten but they tend to keep themselves out of harms reach most of the time.

Regards

I love my red cherries and will be giving them their own planted tank pretty soon here. They're fun to watch when they come out but they dont come out that often which makes it a treat when they do. You think they're all gone until you lift a piece of driftwood and see 8 of them... They're funny though when they start swimming.

yea what kind of shrimp some r harmless some r well not so harmless

Amanos... They can pretty much take care of themselves, TBH.

They'll have plenty to eat from algae and food scraps in your tank. As long as they have somewhere to hide when they're moulting, they should be fast enough to avoid being eaten by most things... Assuming you don't have any fish that are especially fast, aggressive or hungry. ;)

Oh, and your fish are perfectly safe... Though they might possibly catch fish fry on occasion.

I think they're a great addition to a tank. I've got about 10 in my 29gal tank and they're very active little things, and also very funny to watch!

Make sure you give them some food every so often though, they'll eat the algae, but also benifit from algae waffers and other sinking pellets and fresh veg (mine all argue with the BN plec over the cucumber!). One thing about them though I've found, is that with quite a few of them in the tank they do seem to produce quite a lot from their rear ends! Not too much of a problem, as it cleans up easily, and they don't really add any bio-load to your tank, if anything they're benificial.

Also, be careful with your water perameters, as they're quite sensative to changes. The same goes with any medication you put in the tank, make sure that it's not going to kill off the shrimp before adding it!
