whilst at a not-so local fish shop in cardiff at the weekend, i spotted a tank with peacock gobies (which ive been looking for more of for a while now) and another type of goby which ive not seen before. the guy didnt know the name off the top if his head, but it was an elongated, darkly coloured freshwater goby, the ones they had were about 2" but he said they max out at 6" in the wild. I cant remember the name of the shop to call back and ask, but was wondering if anyone might have any ideas as to what they were. a bit vague i realise, but any suggestions would be appreciated and id recognise from a pic if i saw them again.

Could be one of the sleeper goby species, some of them get quite large some are dark brown, green or black.

no, didnt look like the one on the avatar, it was quite a uniform dark colour with a lighter belly and the tell tale ventral sucker, it was also much more elongated and slender in proportion to its length than peacocks or bumblebees. going to try and find out what the shop was called and try to contact them

just spoke to the shop, the only name they had for them was red stripe gobies (no latin name), just googled a pic but they look a lot lighter than the ones i saw, otherwise a similar shape. Cant find much other info on red stripe gobies though, does anyone know of any info on them? cheers

My son may have a pic of a candystripe , he's wanted 1 for a few months now .I'll ask him to post it .

cheers for the pics/info, they do look similar but i have a feeling the ones i saw were a bit darker further round the flanks, may have just been the light tho.

why is it every time i empty a tank to break it down and reduce the number i have i find something i want to put in it - ive got 5 tanks in the front room now and my g/f is gonna kill me when she comes back from uni this weekend!!!

That Candy Stripe goby is beautiful!!!!!!! Where did you get it? How big is the one in the picture? (Nice pic, too.) Is it freshwater or brackish? I never heard of it before.

Nice goby picture!

I think the scientific name for it is Awaous Strigatus.
Also known as the "striated river goby" and comes from South America.

It is supposed to reach 100mm in size, but i have never seen one that big.

It is reported to be a fresh water goby.

Check out my goby on the Picture forum.

it is titled as follows:

"Here is a goby for you! The Beast!"

Not as pretty as the goby picture on here but something different.

I think you're correct fishman .

The fish in the pic is not ours , it is a pic borrowed from somewhere on the net , my son has wanted one for quite some time , and we've also heard that it is a fresh water goby [ Dwarfs is my son ] .

Those are gobies in our current avatars , diff types.

Hello everyone.
I own one of these red stripe gobies. They really are a wonderful addition to any aquarium although quite rare. The males display beautiful colouration during breeding with a vivid red and blue dorsal fin.
My fish is approximately 80mm in length and quite a character, usually active in the day and greedy.
I managed to find mine at a maidenhead aquatics store.
