I'm interested in getting a freshwater clam for my 20 gallon tank. Most of the websites i find dont give me good, solid info. Can anyone give me the basic gist of the requirements and what they do? I'm mostly concerned that it'll die and release toxic ammounts of ammonia :/

I could be wrong but I recall reading some where they realy are not viable in aquariums and will basicly just die. I do not claim to be an expert however but I was researching them at one point and found 2 or 3 things that essentially said what I just did.

^^ You are right.

Clams need a massive amount and constant supply of flowing water, as they're filter feeders, and they just can't get that in aquaria (or in ponds). It's not even worth trying one; it will die very rapidly, unfortunately :(

I wonder why pet stores do that? Its cruel to the animals and misleading to buyers. They always claim they're experts, but not if they keep this up

Some clams aren't impossible to keep, just not worth the effort unless you are really interested in them. Involves searching them out and target feeding them with a syringe/pipette every day with invertebrate food (usually sold for feeding marine clams/corals ect.).

Corbicula fluminea, often called "tropical/freshwater golden clam" is pretty easy to keep and grow this way but it's a lot of work for something you don't really see that much (they can burrow in the substrate).

They are essentially never sold with the correct care info in pet stores and most often simply take months to die in tanks where they aren't fed.

Neal Monks has the best posts on keeping them imo :) : http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=216507&view=findpost&p=1796169
