Hi all
Tried posting this in tropical chit chat with no success so I thought I'd ask the experts. I've never kept bettas but having aquired the jolly MTS in a big way recently, I would love a betta. My workmate gave me a small hex 2g tank which needs a heater and some lighting. Once it's set up and cycled, do you think one male betta would be ok in it. Are males ok by themselves or are they happier with females? Obviously only one male but if with females what ratio and what size tank for more than 1 betta? :dunno:

You should only put one male in that tank as far as bettas go... or one female.
Males and females should only be together when breeding.
As far as a tank mate for your betta... you could get a snail. He doesn't need another tankmate to be happy, he might be better off by himself.

A snail is good, but might become lunch sooner or later

 Yup, snails are wonderfull and nutritious! (no not by me lol, the bettas sillies) :p

They help keep the tank nice and tidey too.

Welcome onboard, Glolite! I'm sure you'd enjoy keeping bettas and grow to love them.

Bettas are known for their pugnacious nature and they (especially males) do not enjoy the company of other bettas (with the exception of the occasional female during spawning). Hence, it's advisable to house your male bettas (or in some instances female bettas) in separate tanks.

Your 2 gallon tank is big enough and will make a nice home for your betta.

My short tail bettas (e.g. plakats and females) are housed in 4x4x8 inch acyclic tanks (half gallon) while my fancy tail bettas (e.g. crown tails and half moons) are transferred to 6x6x8 inch acyclic tanks (1 gallon) when their caudals are fully grown.

My tanks are rather small. So I have to perform partial (50 percent) water changes twice weekly, on weekdays with aged water that has been treated water conditioner. A total (100 percent) water change is done once a week, on weekends.

My bettas would be very jealous if I were to tell them that there are bettas that are living in larger accommodations.

Thanx for the replies. Think I'll eventually go for one male betta. Exciting!!! :hyper:
Do you all mean the plain snails that arrive with new plants? The ones that rapidly multiply which I usually feed to my clown loaches :*) Or are we talking bigger, "Apple snails" for instance?

Hey, guess what!! I filled said tank with water this morning, to check for leaks and it took aroun 30 litres of water. That's about 6g isn't it? Game on!!!! :hyper:

Apple snails it is then. So if this tank is bigger than I thought (useless at estimating tank size aren't I) then is 6g enough for 1 male and say 2 females? Also, can anyone recommend lighting for a 6g hex?

Oh I can picture it already!! ! red male crowntail and 2 females then ..... babies!!!!

then your need lots of tanks to split the babies up....when they start having a go at each other.. :D as for light you can get a small low voltage light for under kitchen units at B&Q that would be ok for your size tank

Yeah, perhaps I'll stick to 1 male and a snail. Thanks for the B&Q tip though!
Where did you get your atavar  It's brilliant.

Hello is anyone there? Is 1 male betta ok or should I put some females in?

Only a male OR only a female (though females can be kept in groups in 10 gallons or more)

EDIT: Imbellis betta or splenden?

ok 1 male and at least 3 females sounds fine but .......When they breed who do you take out. Male or female or both?
