I was think in of how i can bring light into my tank at a fraction of the cost of what it should be.

Well i found it.

It is tubular skylight.... Solatube

so this is what i have thought for the tank.

Thats a wonderful idea. But I live in the UK and it may not work for me (rarely see the sun)

Dubby,

I see The Sun almost every day - it only costs 30p (45p on Saturdays) :p  :p

Cheers, Eddie

I Live in the netherlands in a place called Den Helder

which is the first place all weather hits from the north sea and the norway. i also dont get much light but. what light i do get can compinsate the amount of electrisity i need . Plus i get €450 back from the goverment when i spend over €2000 on installation. be cause this installation wouldnt cost that much i would also install it through out my house. and get the money :D

great idea. i'v seen these before and thought of using the on my reef. the only two problems I could think of were algae problems and also, they may now actually be that bright. great idea and even if they wern't bright enough, it would cut the cost of lighting.

ste :)

those tubes work well in a kitchen, but around here all the lens's are white, don't know if it would help plants or not.

Thats a good one Eddie

Fozzy, I wish the UK govt would provide subsidies like this and I would have got my house wired up with those fibre optic thingies to bring sunshine from the tropics :D

all it is, is a tube with super reflective sides. so what it will do is reflect every thing from the sun. all the gama, UV rays and stuff. so if the light bulbs we use mimic the sun then this woild be perfect. I have one tank at the moment beside the window and it recieves all the light that the day gives. i use no light and i have to cut my plants once every two weeks. so i think it will be ok.

Fozz, I think what mark meant was the diffuser part. You will have shafts of light in your tak, but how will you direct it?

GL

Im not to sure about having shafts of light as the defuser will spread the light out over the whole tank. like the roof defusers you find in your work with the Tube lighting.

Im not installing the spots that you can get from the company but the large roof mounts.

why not a sun roof at that amount of work?

They do indeed look cool though for spots that cant have a sun roof... hmm that answers my question doesn't it?

HOLD ON... your building that monster tank in an apartment stlye complex???
SO... you have no one under you? You are the absolute ground?

Perhaps I missed some posts...
